Non-Toxic Salt: Choosing the Best Salt for Your Diet

Dear Reader, I can’t believe you’re still using toxic table salt.

When I first started paying attention to my diet, I never imagined that salt would become one of my passions. But as I dug deeper into nutrition and healthy eating, I realized that not all salt is created equal. Too many common brands of salt contain unnecessary additives and chemicals that can do more harm than good. If you’re on a health journey like me, swapping out your regular table salt for a healthier option is a small change that can make a big difference and I want to share my favorite salt options with you!

The Hidden Ingredients in Your Salt

When I first started learning about the importance of high-quality salt, I had no idea how drastically different it could be from the regular stuff. Naturally, I checked the label on my own salt at home and was shocked to find ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce. That sent me straight to Google, where I dove into researching salt and quickly ordered the best one I could find.

Take a look at the ingredients list on your table salt at home. You might also be surprised to see more than just “salt” listed there. Many brands add anti-caking agents like sodium aluminosilicate, potassium ferrocyanide, or calcium silicate to prevent clumping. Some also include dextrose, a type of sugar, as a stabilizer. And then there’s iodized salt, which has potassium iodide added to provide iodine—a necessary nutrient, but one that should ideally come from natural sources like seafood or dairy, not from synthetic additives in your salt.

These added chemicals are completely unnecessary. Salt, in its purest form, is just that—salt. And that’s what your body needs.

Why Sodium Matters

Sodium, the main component of salt, is an essential mineral that our bodies rely on for several critical functions. It plays a key role in maintaining fluid balance, ensuring that our cells stay hydrated. Sodium is also an important electrolyte, which helps transmit nerve impulses, contract muscles, and regulate blood pressure. Without enough sodium, your body wouldn’t function properly.

Your body needs a minimum of 500 mg of sodium daily to maintain basic functions like muscle contraction and nerve transmission.

However, it’s important to get your sodium from the purest sources possible. Processed table salt, loaded with chemicals and additives, isn’t the best choice if you’re aiming to optimize your health.

Switching to a high-quality salt is one of the easiest ways to improve your diet. I encourage you to take a look at your current table salt and see what’s really inside. If you see a long list of ingredients, it might be time to make the health swap.

One of my go-to health hacks for boosting electrolytes is adding a pinch of high-quality salt to a cup of warm lemon water.

My Personal Favorite Salts

Crucial Four’s Icelandic Flake Salt (My TOP fave!)

Why I Love It: Rich in magnesium and potassium, this salt is fantastic for adrenal support and overall mineral balance. The delicate, crunchy flakes are one of my favorite textures, making them perfect for homemade electrolyte drinks or as a finishing touch on dishes. I also appreciate how this salt is harvested. It naturally packs in nutrient-dense trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. I find myself reaching for this Icelandic flake salt the most.

Rahua Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner: Natural Volume, No Compromise

Rahua Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner: Natural Volume, No Compromise

Rahua Volumzing Shampoo and Conditioner: Natural Volume, No Compromise

If you’re like me and always on the hunt for clean haircare that actually works, let me put you on to something great: Rahua’s Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner.

This duo has really improved my hair game. I get the volume I want—all while sticking to natural ingredients.

  • Volumizing Shampoo: Gently cleanses with lemongrass and green tea, leaving hair light, bouncy, and refreshed.
  • Volumizing Conditioner: Hydrates without weighing down, using aloe and quinoa protein for soft, shiny, full-bodied hair.

I’m extremely picky when it comes to haircare. While acne is often linked to internal imbalances, it can also show up on your face, chest, neck, and back due to harsh hygiene products. Once I switched to the most natural products I could find, any bumps, acne, or redness I had as a result of my previous products disappeared. Rahua is one of the few brands I trust to touch my hair, and their voluminizing products are some of the best I’ve found in the natural beauty world. I even got my mom to start using the shampoo!

The shampoo’s consistency was a surprise—it’s more gel-like than expected. I’ve discovered that it works best when lathered in my hands before applying it to my scalp. The conditioner is rich and creamy. It’s definitely in my top 3 for the best conditioners overall.

The scent is earthy and bright—very pleasant, but does not linger too long after washing. It’s definitely my favorite fragrance from the Rahua lineup, though.

Why Rahua Is a Must-Try

  • 100% Natural: No nasty chemicals, just pure, clean ingredients.
  • Sustainable: Everything is ethically sourced from the Amazon, helping support indigenous communities.
  • Eco-Friendly: Packaging is recyclable and biodegradable, so you can feel good about your choices.
  • Perfect for All Hair Types: Whether your hair is fine, curly, or somewhere in between, Rahua’s Volumizing line will bring out the best in your natural beauty.

Rahua is known for its commitment to using organic, sustainable ingredients that benefit both your hair and the environment. The star ingredient in their Volumizing line is Rahua oil, a rare and potent oil that has been used by Amazonian women for centuries to strengthen and nourish hair. Rich in omega-9, this oil penetrates deeply into the hair shaft to fortify weak, damaged strands while adding shine and smoothness.

Final Thoughts

I love volume. To me, fuller, bouncier hair looks more youthful and vibrant. But I’m not willing to sacrifice clean ingredients for the sake of volume. Rahua is one of the few clean shampoo/conditioner combos I trust, its volumizing effect is real, and I enjoy the natural, herbal scent.

Get Clear Skin “Now!”

Get Clear Skin “Now!”

Everybody knows that a healthy diet will lead to clearer skin.

We’re told to cut out dairy, sugar, and even gluten if we want to glow. While that’s good advice, it’s usually only effective long-term. Sometimes, you just want “now” solutions for clear skin.

So, without further ado, here are some of my daily, best practices for clear skin that you can implement now.

Pillowcase
As a rule of thumb, I never use the same pillowcase more than 3 times. Just think about it. You sweat during the night, some of you may drool, and your hair products/oils cover the pillowcase. Unless you sleep on your back all night, your face is likely to come in contact with the oils left on the pillow. That means unnecessary bacteria on your face which leads to acne or at least amplifies the acne already present on your face.

If I don’t have time to wash my pillowcase, I usually just put a hand towel on my pillow.

Exercise
Getting your blood flowing with exercise of any kind is a great way to deliver oxygen, blood, and nutrients to your face. I always feel like my face clears up when I get a good workout in and leave the gym with a red face. For some reason, that’s my sign that I’ve got the blood flowing throughout my entire body and I literally feel my skin clearing (it may just be a personal mental trick!)

Face masks
I like to think of face masks as foam rollers for your face. They stimulate your cells, deep clean, hydrate, and feed your face (if you’re using the right ingredients). Using face masks is also a great way to draw out impurities and reset your face.

Water
I know it’s a cliché, but water really does help flush your system’s toxins out, and I have noticed changes in my appearance when I drink more water. For some reason, reaching my daily water intake has been difficult since moving to online school. The best tip I have is to drink water first thing in the morning and fill up a water bottle to drink throughout the day. Make drinking water more accessible to you.

Massage

I massage my face every night as part of my nightly routine. A massage can help strengthen your muscles and stimulates the movement of lymph fluids in your body. The lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from your tissues, thus helping you have clearer skin. In addition, massages are preventative measures against wrinkles! There are countless face massage tutorials on the internet you can follow! My favorite is Olga Toja on YouTube!

Sacramento, CA Travel Guide

Sacramento, CA Travel Guide

Two weeks ago, I got to visit Sacramento, California. It was my first-time visiting California. To be honest, I had never heard great things about the West Coast. And for that reason, I never had a great desire to visit. But, after spending a weekend in California’s capital city, I finally understood why it is adored by so many.

I was most surprised by the variety of regional landscapes in California. Even though I did not get to see the entire state, I got to experience the many climates within one region. Driving just one hour out of the city brings a completely different climate! It was quite cool.

In many ways, California is similar to Moldova. The dry air and balmy weather emulated what I had experienced in Moldova. Even some of the buildings and overall city layout in Sacramento felt nostalgic to my Moldovan home. And maybe that’s why I left Sacramento with such a positive experience.

I hope to explore the rest of California in the future, but for now, I’ll share the coolest and not-so-coolest spots to visit when in/near Sacramento.

FOOD & DRINK

Dutch Bros Coffee: Aggressively underwhelming. When I asked what to order, “Don’t get the coffee” was the first thing said which is ironic considering its called “Dutch Bros Coffee.” I tried various teas and the banana bread Dutch Cocoa which were yummy overall, but not necessarily something I would go out of my way for.

In-N-Out: Incredibly overrated fast food joint. The burgers are just okay, but possibly better than some of the fast food burger places we have in NC. In-N-Out Fries are not good by any standard. Overall, there are better places to eat, however the experience itself is worth it and it was intriguing to experience the hype.

Cafeteria 15L: For brunch, this place is a move. There were so many options on the menu and the food was excellent (especially their truffle tots!). It’s located right in the middle of downtown Sacramento, so I give bonus points for location. Cafeteria 15L felt like a mix of a café and bar. It’s half-indoor, half-outdoor venue set such a nice ambiance. 11/10 for the coolest bathroom I’ve ever been in.

Yard House (Sacramento- Downtown Commons): Ok ok, we didn’t actually get to go to this one… BUT everybody and their mom was raving about Yard House. It’s also located downtown, so eating there gives you that larger-than-life, big-city feeling. Yard House also has several locations across the U.S.

The Pour Choice: Located in Auburn, CA (about a 40-minute drive from Sacramento), The Pour Choice is one of the most endearing coffee spots I’ve been to. The shop is nestled in the hills of a cute, old-timey town. The Pour Choice is aesthetically unique and inviting. It’s California’s first and only craft coffee bar and tap room. I imagine it’s a great place to study. Bonus points for the creative name!

Burger & Cream: Above and beyond my In-N-Out experience, Burger & Cream is a classic, family-owned burger joint. The burgers, fries, and onion rings were fantastic. It’s location and atmosphere is charmingly quaint. As the name suggests, Burger & Cream has amazing sweet treats like milkshakes, ice cream, and floats.

PLACES

San Francisco is only 1.5 hours from Sacramento while Lake Tahoe is just under 2 hours away. The diversity of landscapes is truly astounding!

Foresthill Bridge: Want an easy hike with a beautiful view? Foresthill Bridge is a wonder to see and it’s the highest bridge in California! There is also a trail with stairs leading to a secret spot under the bridge where you can sit and view the vast landscape.

Capitol Park: Also located downtown, this park is in close proximity to many restaurants and cafés. It features a beautiful rose garden and lovely walking paths in view of the capital building. The trees here are amazing!!

CHURCHES

Of course, no stop is complete without a lovely, spirit-filled community to fellowship with.

Healthy Hair Means Healthy Skin

Healthy Hair Means Healthy Skin

Ah, hair. An often-overlooked aspect of our beauty routines because we tend to pay less attention to the harmful ingredients found in hair care. For a long time, I treated haircare as separate from my skincare. I have now come to realize how closely related the two are. In fact, both hair and skin share a protein called keratin.

The way you nourish your skin will affect your hair health, and the products you use on your hair will definitely affect your entire body’s skin health.

For example, I used to buy drugstore hair products like shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, oils, and gels. As I got older, I began noticing acne appear on various parts of my body, and especially my back. I immediately assumed it was an internal imbalance or problem, but when I switched to non-toxic haircare products, the acne on my body disappeared!

If your skincare routine features non-toxic products and you’re still using toxic haircare, then your skincare is still toxic.

Click here for a quick list of cosmetic ingredients to avoid.

I have also listed quick links to my favorite haircare brands in the Beauty section of my website to make it even easier for you to make the switch to non-toxic products. Check it out!

Now that you have given your hair the attention it deserves, here are a few foundational tips for healthy hair!

1. Stay Hydrated! Not only is hydration a prerequisite for living, it helps your hair grow! Poor hydration will halt hair growth and leave the hair brittle and dry. Water makes up 25% of the weight of a hair strand… so, drink up!

2. Give your hair a break, limit heat styling tools!

3. Go a couple of days between washes! Give your hair time to produce and spread its oils.

4. Brush your hair before you hop in the shower to minimize breakage and remove tangles!

5. Treat yourself to a hair mask! Sometimes your hair just needs a break. Even with regular washing, your hair will experience product buildup which takes a toll on your hair. A mask is a great way to push the reset button and deep clean your hair. Just make sure you use a non-toxic formula or DIY your hair masks like I do!
